Triptych book launch @ Ad Astra 2011

JM Frey's debut novel Triptych was launched at this year's Ad Astra in Toronto. As a surprise, I flew in from the UK - JM had no idea I was coming. I think her exact words, upon seeing me approach her publisher's table, were "What the hell are you doing in this country?!" Nice to see you, too ;) It was a great launch, with friends, family, and fans (blue Kalp ears, anyone?)

Walking in Wales

I joined the Brunel Walking Group on an outing to the Wye Valley - starting at Chepstow Castle, along Offa's Dyke to Tintern Abbey, then back along the Wye Valley to the castle again. Amazing views from the top of the ridge - but it was pouring by then, and the camera was tucked back into my pack. Luckily, the weather held for the morning, and only starting raining as we were finishing eating our lunches in the shadow of the Abbey. Great day out with good company!

Christmas in Bristol

This year, I had roasted chestnuts (twice) and mulled wine from the German Christmas Market that sets up camp in Broadmead.

Autumn Hues

Took a meandering walk around Clifton in Bristol today, and ended up at the suspension bridge. Lovely, clear day. I was hoping to get some photos of the trees changing colour, but I suppose that mid-October is still a bit too early here in the UK for it. Back home in Ontario, the trees were already on their way in September, and I guess I'm still getting used to green leaves in England well into autumn. I did find a couple of trees that had started to change, though. Hopefully the rest will follow soon.

Objectified

I watched Gary Hustwit's (of Helvetica fame) second film Objectified the other day. What I like about these two films is that Hustwit will let the objects (or typeface) do the talking - long takes with no voice over, the narrative being told by the journey of the objects themselves. It's clean and concise, rather like Helvetica itself. I had thought that Objectified would have gone more into the details of consumer culture - how it works, consequences, etc. But rather than give us a lecture on recycling, consumption, and big business, the film focuses on the designers behind the products. A great second film. I'm looking forward to his third, Urbanized.
